A Day in the Life of a Sloth Technician

This Collection is my visual journal of my time spent in Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Costa Rica. I took a position as a Sloth Technician at the Sloth Institute for three months (Jan -April 2018). This position required me to become nocturnal in order to observe and collect behavioral data of the Hoffman's two finger sloth. In doing so, I slept in a tent with no air conditioning, shared an outhouse, shower, and kitchen with four other people, worked 9 hour shifts, 6 days a week tracking sloths with radio telemetry and taking data. A typical day would be to wake up around 11am, go to the beach until 4pm, have work at either 6pm or 9pm and hike around 4 miles a night until 3am or 6 am, come back to camp, shower and sleep until its too hot to sleep anymore (around 11am) and repeat. Some days, we would be lucky enough  to help with sloth physicals and rehabilitation duties. Some nights we would get radioed to leave our assigned post to help in a sloth emergency. These are just some general insights to a sloth technician life. My drawings are a first perspective view of studying sloths, daily beach visits, some sloth love, and some bar lounging. Each piece has a title that was a memory. Some titles are song lyrics because our two finger sloths are named after pop artists. I chose lyrics that pertained to the moment and the artist. And some pieces are named simply from the memory. During this part of my life, i was able to fulfill my dream of researching sloths while pursuing and practicing my passion for art.

These pieces were displayed at The Poughkeepsie Grind on Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. For each print sold, a percentage of the proceeds go to The Sloth Institute Costa Rica.
